The Boulonnais comes from the area around Boulogne, north east France. Two types were bred, one was a heavy farm worker and the other was a Mareyeur which means 'fish-seller'. This horse was then used to transport fish from the coast to Paris. Despite its size, the Boulonnais is an elegant horse due to Ancestors, the Arabian and the Barb. They are fast movers, making them faster than many other heavy horses. Some of them still work on farms, but to make sure the breed doesn't die oit, the French government has started breeding them.
